National Men's Health Week
If you’re like most people, you might think the week leading up to Father’s Day is all about finding a last-minute gift for dads that are hard to shop for, but this year, we’re shifting our focus to a little something different – Men’s Health Week!
Men’s Health Week was created in 1994 by the U.S. Congress and is now officially recognized in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, and more. While men’s health and wellness can often get overlooked, this week-long event was created to bring it to everyone’s attention. We’re giving you the full rundown on Men’s Health Week: what it’s really about, and how the men in your life can keep their health in check!
Show your support and increase awareness for the week by wearing blue, the official color for the event, chosen by the Men’s Health Network. Wearing something blue, like a ribbon pinned to your shirt, helps bring attention to the importance of male health, while also bringing awareness to serious conditions such as prostate cancer. You might even see the popular hashtag, #ShowUsYourBlue floating around on social media too!
We all know a few tough guys that ignore their symptoms when they start to feel sick, shrugging it off with the common excuse, “it’s probably nothing,” so Men’s Health Week is the perfect time to step away from that mindset and get to the doctor for a checkup – a vital part of preventative care. The Men’s Health Network put together an entire health checklist that encourages men to get a regular checkup and preventative screening, making it easier than ever to keep up with your wellness!
Not only does Men’s Health Week promote awareness, but it’s an opportunity for men to learn their current health status and what they can do to improve their overall health. Most men can tell you stats from their favorite sports and popular athletes, so we know how much they love to keep up with data, but how many men know their own stats? Keeping up with key numbers like blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight can play a huge part in improving your health. It’s time to study up and know those important numbers, as well as the healthy ranges to aim for!
Former Congressman, Bill Richardson, said, “Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue.” There are tons of ways that you can improve your health as a family, like getting outside to play sports or hitting up your local 9Round together. Talk to the men in your family about their health, and use Men’s Health Week as motivation to quit pushing their health problems to the side!
Whether it’s your husband, dad, brother, or friend, let the men in your life know they don’t have to improve their health alone. It’s never too late (or too soon) to take steps to live a healthier life! A great way to achieve health and fitness goals is by taking care of your body, and exercising at least 30 minutes a day, three times a week.
And if you’re still stumped on what to get for a Father’s Day gift, skip the classic “world’s best dad” t-shirt – give him the gift of a healthy, happy life! Knock out those 30 minutes of exercise with a 9Round membership, and get a hard-hitting workout together that’ll leave you both feeling healthier.
